• Obituary: 2 Mar 1951, Dawson Memorial Hospital, Bridgewater, NS. Archibald Feindel, a highly respected citizen of Bridgewater, passed away on Friday, March 2nd, at the age of 67 years. Although, in failing health for the past four months, Mr. Feindel had been seriously ill at the D.M. Hospital for omly three weeks.
He was born in Bridgewater in May, 1883, the son of the late Ariel and Sophia Feindel. He was married in 1909 to Edith Barteaux, of Nictaux Falls, by whom he is survived. There also survive to mourn his death, four sons, Ariel, Walter, of Bridgewater, Carroll, of the R.C.A.F. in Aylmer, Ont., and John, student at Acadia University, and two daughters, Isabella, Mrs. Walter O'Brien, of Globe, Arizona; and Evelyn, Mrs. Louis Quick of Bridgewater. There are eight grandchildren and a brother, R.R. Feindel; a sister, Beatrice, both of Bridgewater, and a sister, Hilda, Mrs. Oliver Allen, of Port Elgin, N.B.
Mr. Feindel was widely known throughout the Maritimes as Manager of the Lunenburg Milling Co. since 1920, until five years ago, when he ceased active management in the company but retained his interest as president.
He was a faithful member of the Bridgewater Baptist church, which he served as Deacon and Trustee, and for 27 years as treasurer. He served the town as councillor for eight years and was deeply interested in the welfare of the community. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, and for a year, was treasurer of the Bridgewater Branch of the V.O.N., when ill health forced him to give up his work there.
The funeral service was held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, in the baptist church, by Rev. D.L. Kennedy, pastor of the church, who paid a fine tribute to the late Mr. Feindel as a faithful Christian and citizen of his native town. The choir, under the leadership of the organist, Mrs. W.A.Gow, led in the singing of well-loved hymns, 'Unto the Hills Around' and 'Safe in the Arms of Jesus.' Beautiful floral tributes testified to the respect of his fellow citizens and Mayor V.L. Saunders and Councillors attended in a body. Kiwanians served as flower bearers for thier former president. Senior deacons, Rev H.Y. Payzant, and John Strothard were honorary pall-bearers and Caleb Hewey, S.K. Charlton, C.D. Allen and Clarence Richards, officers of the church served as pall-bearers.
Burial took place in Brookside cemetery, Bridgewater.

• WW 1 Service: Battle of Hill 70, Aug 1917, Lens, France. COUNTY - Young men from Lunenburg County, so-called volunteer citizen soldiers of the First World War, fought and died in proportionally high numbers in what Canadian War Museum First World War historian Tim Cook has described as a significant yet little known battle fought and won almost entirely by Canadians.
The Battle for Hill 70 was overshadowed by Canada's success in the Battle for Vimy Ridge and at Passchaendale, Dr. Cook wrote in a March 1, 2012, edition of the Legion magazine.
"It remains one of the most important Canadian Battles of the Great War," still "it remains relatively unknown" despite the fact "that Canadians punched far above their weight," wrote the author, who won the 2009 Charles Taylor Prize for non-fiction.
Lunenburg County, considering its population base, defiantly punched far above its weight as the Canadian corps fought its way up the slopes that bristled with German machine gun nests. They quickly took the hill overlooking the major coal mining city of Lens, France. "We gained our objectives with very few casualties," wrote Pte. Stephen (Steve) Conrad, of Bridgewater.
But Pte. Conrad, with many years' pre-war militia experience, knew that taking the hill was one thing, keeping it was another. "We at once began to consolidate our trench and prepare for counter-attacks."
The Canadians ruled the hill but it wasn't long before the Germans "tried to retake it and we drove him back. The next morning, he tried again and failed," Pte. Conrad wrote in a letter on file on the Veterans Affairs Canada website.
The Germans were determined to prevent the enemy from keeping the strategic vantage point from which to observe and later attack Lens and its important coal resources. In the battle that began August 15, 1917, the Germans counterattacked 21 times, war historians record.
The bloody fighting ranged from close combat in hillside trenches to open warfare on the plains leading towards Lens. The life and death struggles began each time the enemy reached Canadian positions, said Pte. Conrad describing the brutality of the fighting. "We got him out of the trenches and fought him in No Man's Land under a barrage of fire from both sides. We met and clashed in the open, using our bayonets. They fought like rats ... ."
The Germans abandoned the fight to regain Hill 70 by August 18. "So we now hold all," said Pte. Conrad, in an August 23 letter to his mother, Rosanna.
The Canadian triumph that August in France had taken a German casualty toll two and a half times the number of casualties in its own ranks. This loss of enemy soldiers had a severe impact on Germany's fighting strength. Canada's Lt.-Gen. Sir Arthur Currie had "proven an innovative and able commander," a Canadian War Museum battle summary notes. Another key high-ground position near Vimy Ridge had been captured by Canadians and was to remain in Allied control for the remainder of the war.
The Canadian victory did not come without a heavy price. In a few short days in August 1917, 10,000 Canadian soldiers were killed, wounded or reported missing on Hill 70. Six or more local men died in the battle or days immediately following.
The Canadian Virtual War Memorial website maintained by Veterans Affairs Canada recorded the details of the deaths and burials. Library and Archives Canada files contain their attestation papers, the documents soldiers signed on enlistment, which show details of their background.
Pioneer Robert Duff, a 29-year-old civil engineer, from Bridgewater, died in the early hours of battle. He had trained as an infantryman but because of this profession he had been transferred to a unit that performed the role of a battlefield construction company. War had made another young wife a widow. Sheila Nelson Duff, living for the war years with family in Toronto, had lost a husband. Canada had lost another of the thousands more talented men who would die for the Armistice.
Pte. James Allison Dauphinee, a lanky labourer from Marriotts Cove, died August 16. He was 24 years of age.
Pte. Earl Caleb Rhodenhizer, a country boy from Parkdale, also died August 16. He had fair hair, blue eyes, was age 23 and, like Pte. Dauphinee, was also a labourer. A greenhorn to military life, he had sworn allegiance to King George V in the winter of 1916.
Cpl. James McPherson had been killed on August 17. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he somehow found himself at the recruiting office in Bridgewater on a cold winter day, December 30, 1915. He was age 23 and had no previous militia experience when he signed on as an ordinary rank soldier for overseas service with an infantry battalion.
Killed August 20, 1917, as Canadians fought to move closer towards Lens, was married 36-year-old farmer Owen Gates Dauphinee. He had, at his own choice, given up a relatively safe and prestigious wartime job as a captain at Bramshott Camp, England, and reverted to the rank of lieutenant in order to fight on the Western Front. "He was in the trenches several times, did great work and died a hero," said Pte. Conrad.
Pte. Howard Ariel Feindel also died in battle that day. He had no previous militia experience when he enlisted in an infantry battalion 21 months before at age 18.

One of the finest all-round athletes ever to grace the playing fields of Acadia was the late Dr. James Robert Feindel, better known to the sports followers of his time as "Jo-Jo".
Jim Feindel, who departed from Acadia during the spring of 1938, entered Dalhousie University that fall. In 1943, he graduated with his M.D. and immediately entered World War II, subsequently being decorated in his role as a Medical Officer. Following years of meritorious service in England, Germany and Korea, he served as a commanding officer at Gagetown, New Brunswick. He later served for seven years with the New Brunswick Department of Health -before returning "home" to Bridgewater to engage as a general practitioner.
During his undergraduate years at Acadia, he became a living legend on the rugby field, the ice lanes and track and field sites.
Following early recognition as a key member of Acadia's intermediate rugby championship team of '34- 35, "Jo-Jo" continued to impress as he starred with the '35-36 Acadia club that won the Nova Scotia Intercollegiate title by defeating St. F.X., 6-3. On November 4, 1936, as the Acadia boys won the Maritime title, this lanky three-quarter star drew plenty of praise for his outstanding performance.
In hockey, Jim Feindel was a very capable athlete. Playing in the midst of such stars as Neil Sanford, Jack Murdock and others, Jim was an impressive performer. Highlighting his ice lanes career was the game of February 23, 1938 in which he and his teammates dethroned St. F.X. to win the provincial intercollegiate title.
In track and field, "Jo-Jo" Feindel was an even bigger attraction, consistently winning first-place medals in the 220 yards, 440 yards, 880 yards and javelin events.
During the spring of '37 the Fred Kelly-coached track and field team won the Maritime title for the eighth time in a nine-year span. On that occasion Jim won medals in six events as he emerged as the meet's high individual scorer with twenty-three points. The following spring he was again the Maritimes' top individual scorer with twenty-five points as the Kellymen repeated as tri-province champs.
An editorial of the time summed up "Jo-Jo's" contribution to the sports life at Acadia: "Captain Jo-Jo Feindel, the Flying Dutchman, regarded as one of the greatest athletes to ever attend Acadia, was the overwhelming factor …"

William Feindel, O.C., G.O.Q., MDCM, D. Phil. 1918 - 2014
Dr. William Feindel, one of Canada's most distinguished neurosurgeons and third director of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) of McGill University and the MUHC passed away quietly at The Neuro on January 12, 2014 following a brief illness.
He will be missed by his loving wife, Faith (née Lyman), his two sons Christopher (Mary Ann) and Michael (Karen) his three daughters, Patricia, Janet (Robert) and Anna (Bernard), his two grandsons Michael (Laura) and Andrew (Tina) and his great- grandson Finn. He was predeceased by his beloved son Alexander (Ling) in 1985.
For over 60 years, Dr. Feindel made his mark on Canadian medicine in surgery, research and administrative policy. His influence on his colleagues and on his many students was widespread. To the very end of his life, he remained a curious student of neurological science, and avidly took part in The Neuro's activities.
William Howard Feindel was born in 1918 in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. He earned his undergraduate degree at Acadia University, where many years later he would serve as Chancellor. After graduation, he attended Merton College, Oxford University, as a Rhodes Scholar, earning a D. Phil. in neuroanatomy. In Montreal during the Second World War, Dr. Feindel worked to develop treatments for war injuries along with The Neuro's founder and first director, Dr. Wilder Penfield.
After earning his medical degree at McGill University and further studies in neurosurgery at Oxford, Dr. Feindel became the first professor of neurosurgery at the medical college in Saskatoon in 1955. Seeing the potential of brain scanning equipment, he developed the first automatic isotope scanner.
He returned to The Neuro in 1959 as the first William Cone Professor of Neurosurgery. Three years later, he was appointed The Neuro's neurosurgeon-in-chief. A researcher who contributed to more than 500 scientific papers, Dr. Feindel had special interest in determining the causes of focal epilepsy as well as in finding methods for the early detection of brain tumours and strokes. He helped to develop what came to be known as the Montreal Procedure for temporal lobe epilepsy, which involved the surgical resection of the antero-mesial temporal lobe. The procedure was subsequently adopted throughout the world, leading to cures for thousands of epilepsy patients.
During his tenure as The Neuro's director from 1972 to 1984, Dr. Feindel largely introduced revolutionary brain scanning tools to Canada, acquiring the country's first CAT, MR and PET units. In 1984, the tools were combined into the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, a unit that established The Neuro as one of the world's leading brain-imaging facilities. Under Dr. Feindel's direction, The Neuro doubled in size with the construction of two new wings, the Penfield Pavilion and the Webster Pavilion.
Along with his scientific research papers, Dr. Feindel wrote extensively on topics of medical history, especially about the work of Thomas Willis, the seventeenth-century British pioneer in brain research. In 1964, Dr. Feindel published a facsimile in English of Willis's treatise of 1664, "Cerebri Anatome". The Osler Library of the History of Medicine at McGill University elected Dr. Feindel as Honorary Osler Librarian in 1984.
Dr. Feindel's many contributions to medical science were recognized in 2003, when he was among the earliest inductees into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. The induction was one of numerous honours accorded him, including honorary degrees and membership in the Order of Canada, the Ordre national du Québec (Grand Officier), the Académie des Grand Montréalais, and the Royal Society of Canada. McGill inaugurated the William Feindel Chair in Neuro-Oncology in 2001 with the support of the Clive Baxter Memorial Fund.
For many years, Dr. Feindel worked on an extensive history of The Neuro. The result of his labours is scheduled to be published by McGill/Queens Press under the title, The Brain Doctors. A collection of his historical observations about life and work at The Neuro was published in 2013 as Images of the Neuro. Until the end of his life, Dr. Feindel maintained an office at The Neuro and continued to attend lectures and conferences.
Dr. Feindel was an avid pianist and violinist, performing along with his colleagues at The Neuro's annual variety show. He was also a keen sailor and spent a summer sailing a schooner down the St. Lawrence River with his then fiancée Faith.
Beyond all his scientific and clinical achievements, Dr. Feindel's true gift was his ability to connect with other human beings in a warm and genuine way. His charm, wit and intelligence engaged all who had the good fortune to know him. He will be missed by his family, friends, and colleagues around the globe.
The funeral service will be private. A public Memorial will be held at a later date. Faith Dorothy Roswell Feindel (née Lyman), best known as Faith or Aunt Faith, died peacefully in her home at Kensington Place in the late hours of a beautiful Montreal afternoon on June 16, 2016. She was 96 years old. Faith was the exceptional and loving wife of the late Dr. William Howard Feindel (Bridgewater, NS) and beloved mother to her six children: Christopher (Mary Ann), Alexander (deceased; Ling), Patricia, Janet (Robert), Michael (Karen), and Anna. She was born in Montreal on February 6, 1920, to Walter and Anna Lyman (née Scrimger), the youngest of three dear siblings: her sisters Beatrice and Monica and her brother Francis-all now deceased. She has also been fortunate to see her two grandsons, Mike (Laura) and Andrew (Tina), grow into adulthood and was able to welcome the arrival of two great-grandchildren, Finn and Jacob.
As a young girl, Faith briefly attended The Study in Westmount and then transferred to the Trafalgar School for Girls, or "Traf," a school she adored and that nurtured her robust love of sports, especially basketball. Her appointment as Head Girl for 1936-37 was a title she bore with pride to her very last days.
As a young woman, she revelled in the Montreal of the thirties, attending dances and balls at the Ritz, the Windsor, and Mount Royal hotels, but when war broke out, Faith was more than keen to "do one's bit." She studied to become a Registered Nurse in Kingston and upon her return to Montreal in 1943, RN in hand, sought induction at the Naval Recruitment Centre, which turned down this very fresh applicant. Undeterred, she walked straight into the doors of the Montreal Neurological Institute and was hired on the spot-and it was here that she would meet Bill Feindel, then a neurosurgical resident. They were married in 1945. With Faith's tremendous support, Bill's career as a neurosurgeon grew to be world renowned, and it was a world they would travel well together.
In her mid-thirties, when she and Bill lived in Saskatoon, Faith took some art classes and began what would turn into a lifelong passion for painting, in oils and watercolours. Upon returning to Montreal, she enriched her appreciation by enrolling at the then Saidye Bronfman Centre to take instruction from the Montreal artist Yehouda Chaki. And the landscape she would paint, over and over, for decades to come, was "Bic," the Lyman country place located on the lower St. Lawrence near Rimouski, PQ, where she spent her summers from childhood throughout adulthood. Faith drank in the natural wonder and adventure of Bic's near wilderness, home to seals, beluga whales, osprey, and porcupines; old campsites for the Iroquois and the Hurons; and even a hideout for rum-runners during Prohibition. This was tomboy country at its best: shorts and topsiders, hair tied back, free as a bird. It was here that the mother of six could catch a break, sailing solo her 13-foot Freia-a single-master she painstakingly maintained. It's where she concocted her gooseberry jams, rhubarb pies, and homemade lemonade, planned treasure hunts and bonfires, and swam every single morning in the icy waters of the St. Lawrence. And it was here that she could raise her children in close communion with cousins galore, fostering bonds that hold strong to this day.
When her children grew up, Faith went back into nursing, trained as a psychiatric nurse, and pursued with delight and commitment her work at the Montreal General Hospital and later at the Allan Memorial Institute, until she reluctantly resigned at the young age of 90.
Faith Feindel was a talented artist, a great reader, a devoted letter writer, a captivating storyteller, an experienced horse rider, a skillful skier, a Brown Owl, and a fearless sailor. She loved her city, she loved the culture of her province, being fully bilingual from an early age, and she was fiercely proud to be a Canadian. A profound and empathetic soul, she generously shared her warmth and wisdom with those around her. Faith will be deeply missed by a host of admirers: her immediate family, a sea of cousins, nieces, and nephews, and the many, many friends whose hearts she touched during the bountiful years she was able to grace us with her loving presence. Adieu, dearest Faith, adieu.

Mrs. O'Brien had been a registered nurse.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Fred Bell, of Chatsworth; a brother, Dr. John Feindel, of Canada; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

And my father looked on...adoringly. And there was her long journey as a copper enameling artist in the 60"s. A long-time member of the Toronto Metal Arts Guild, she designed earrings and pins and ashtrays sculpted in all manner of glass colour, eventually graduating to larger pieces in frames.
My cousin Kim is the proud owner of her famous (still working) copper enameled clock. She had an annual booth at the CNE in the Arts and Crafts Building for years. From the age of nine I wandered freely through the Exhibition grounds without a care in the world.
I hand painted golf ball earrings and sold them with her. My brother Laurie built a darkroom in the basement nurturing his skills as a photographer. She and Dad both inspired a carefree sprit and entrepreneurial instinct in us that still lasts to this day.
She studied and obtained her real estate license and worked for Royal LePage for years…There was Avon and Mary Kay cosmetics. She expanded her business horizons and recruited other enthusiasts with her eye on the pink Cadillac.

The remainder of his life he lived in New Germany, working as bookkeeper for Zwicker Brothers mill and various other businesses in New Germany. Ronald was one of the founding members of the New Germany Branch 102 of the Royal Canadian Legion and served 2 terms as president. He was also an honorary member of the New Germany Volunteer Fire Department, having served as Deputy Chief and Secretary. In his younger years he was also a member of the New Germany Band. He enjoyed sport fishing, hunting and cottage life at Lake William. He is survived by his wife of 69 years Frances Amelia (Rhuland); daughters Wendy (Dennis Mader) Lunenburg; Jane Feindel, Black River; grandchildren, John Mader (Carol) Center; Gwen Mader (Jason) Salmon River; Stephen (Tanya) Mader Lunenburg; great grandchildren, Aaron, Adam and Amanda Rowlands; Shelby and Jarett Mader; Christian, Colin and Cody. Besides his parents he was predeceased by sister Merna (Freeman, Chesley) and half sister Mabel Powers. A memorial service will be held 2pm Tuesday, March 20 in Sweeny's Funeral Home, 4895 hwy 10 New Germany, Pastor Bethe Benjamin-Cameron officiating. A legion tribute service will be held prior to the service at 1:30pm. Private family burial will be in the Epworth Cemetery, New Germany. There will be no visitation by request. Born in New Germany, he was a son of the late Harris and Jennie (Parnell) Feindel. Surviving are his wife, Hendrika (Bos); daughter, Anne (Arden) Mailman, Midville Branch; son, Foard Feindel, Shelburne; step children, Helene (Gerald) DeLong, Barss Corner; Everet (Judy) Van't hof, Bridgewater; John (Donna) Van't hof, Barss Corner; Janet (Royce) Slauenwhite, New Germany; Tina (Jim) DeLong, Barss Corner; Lisa (Derek) Sally, Middleton; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Leota (Fancy) Feindel; brothers, Max and George. A private family service will be held with Rev. Sam Jess officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, New Germany. Family flowers only please, donations may be made to Barss Corner Community Hall or charity of choice.
